Essential Resources for Families Raising Children on the Autism Spectrum

By Brilliant Children, Nonprofit Organization
Raising a child on the autism spectrum is a journey filled with love, questions, and learning. At Brilliant Children, we believe families deserve free, trusted resources to help them navigate every milestone, challenge, and triumph with confidence and community.

1. Early Intervention & Diagnosis

Getting a diagnosis can be overwhelming, but early support is key. Here are a few trusted organizations that help:

  • CDC’s Developmental Milestones Tracker
  • Autism Navigator – Guided courses for families
  • Local Early Intervention Programs – Search via ChildFind
Pro Tip: Don’t wait for a diagnosis to seek help. If you see developmental delays, resources are available now.

2. Finding the Right Therapies

Each child is uniqueβ€”what works for one may not work for another. Common therapies include:

  • Speech & Occupational Therapy
  • ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) – widely used, though perspectives vary
  • DIR/Floortime, Play Therapy, and Music Therapy

Ask providers about progress tracking and how they include parent collaboration in care.

3. Educational Support & IEPs

Public schools are legally required to support children with disabilities. You’re entitled to:

  • IEP (Individualized Education Program)
  • 504 Plans
  • Special Education Advocates (often free via nonprofits)

Look for support from local Parent Training and Information Centers (PTIs) through Parent Center Hub.

4. Community & Emotional Support for Parents

You deserve support too. Helpful places to connect:

  • Facebook Groups like “Autism Parents Support”
  • The Mighty – personal stories and parent perspectives
  • Autism Support Nonprofits in your state (many offer respite care)

5. Free Online Resources & Guides

  • Autism Speaks Resource Library
  • Wrightslaw – Special Ed law made simple
